Bordered by the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea, Latvia and Russia, the Republic of Estonia is one of the states of the Baltic region of northern Europe. Considered one of the most technologically sophisticated and advanced countries in the world, Estonia formally declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 20, 1991. This followed the 1989, “Singing Revolution“, a landmark demonstration for more independence featuring a human chain of more than two million people, stretching through Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
